Harriet's Story

Harriet Mulenga is the youngest daughter of Catherine and her late husband, Joseph.

Harriet was born in 2009 with spina bifida, a congenital abnormality of the spine that causes paralysis of the lower limbs. She required surgery in her first two weeks of life to close the defect in the lower back and to prevent fatal infection. The surgical service has been provided by a charity hospital in Lusaka, but arranging to travel to and from the city has been a financial challenge for the family, as they live approximately 8 hours’ bus drive away in the Eastern Province.

When Harriet’s father passed away in 2011, Catherine has found it increasingly difficult to cope with Harriet’s disability and medical needs as she is now a single mother with 3 children to support.

The family were delighted with a wheelchair given to them by Mercy Flyers (in partnership with Sheryl Ramsey - Wheelchairs for Zambia). Thank you to everyone who made this possible!
